One of my favorite movies from the past 10 years was Castaway with Tom Hanks. I think of the part where he tells the story of how he felt alone, like he had no control of anything on the island, and how, at one point, he was going to end it all. He created a rope and went to the highest point of the island.

Many get to that feeling each and every day; they make the plan to get to that place where they create a plan to end it all. Tom Hanks’ character explained in the movie when he tested the rope the tree limb broke. He felt hopeless; he could not even kill himself.

This year of meeting and hearing so many speakers for the first time has been great. Today I want to talk about my meeting with Rhonda Britten, who has her own story of attempting suicide and failing three times. She then realized she must find a solution because she was not good at this killing herself thing.

I met Rhonda for the first time in October at my friend Tera McHugh’s boot camp. As usual, I meet someone in a great way – this time with Rhonda jumping into a conversation with my friend Yoti and me, saying, “Excuse me. There’s a pretty woman here who in being ignored.”  That sense of humor in Rhonda grabbed me first and made me anticipate her as a great speaker that day.

When she got up in front of the room it took less than 15 minutes for me to see that, yes, I have some areas I’m living in fear that need some correction. Rhonda has a way of doing that. She then explained what to do to master your fear – something I didn’t think this confident RockStar needed.

I was shocked to see all the places that Rhonda has spoken, shows she has been on, and places where she was interviewed. Then, through her work, I saw how small my research of learning things from people is. When you are in the business of helping people you are always searching for ways to make your progress better.

Another thing I learned from Rhonda is those that get past the tough stuff in life usually end up creating some way to do it.  Many of my mentors teach how to find a way to do something when it works then go teach others. Rhonda helped impress this on me as one of the five people who highly influenced me this year. That is why I included her in this week of inspiration and motivation.

I challenge you to find out that one message you don’t think you need to hear and listen. See if something was meant for you to listen to in that message. Come back tomorrow as we share the last day of motivation and inspiration with someone who challenges me every time I see him.
