Where It’s At

where its atI am sitting in the coffee shop this morning just wanting to take a few minutes to relax, think of my week ahead and how it’s going to play out. The music playing on the system is just the right tune for today. When I sat down it was Jon Lennon’s, “ Starting Over .”

The next song starts playing and it gets me to thinking about this week on the blog. It’s been a long times since I have heard Beck’s song, “Where It’s At.” I quickly looked at the lyrics of the song again to refresh my memory.

“I got two turntables and a microphone.” Some of the basics to make a great outside party. I know this week is supposed to be about the money and where we are leaving it on the table. Maybe you are asking after reading yesterday’s post, “Where is the money at?”

The reason I like to work with those that have a forward-moving idea, a business that is going places already is this: too many times they have made it so complicated that they lose money in working to make the process. The first thing we need to do when working together is get back to the most simple of tasks. What was it that started you on this dream or venture in the first place?

When I work with people in my coaching programs, just trying to start something, to get their dream or business off the ground, they have that dream, they have the burn and all I need to do is give them the basics. They want to take those two turntables, that microphone and start the biggest party.

So you are here looking for the money; you are reading and yelling, “Where is it at?” You want to find it and you hope it’s a simple thing; you want to find it and keep it all. I want to take you back to the early ‘90s, and the movie, Jerry Maguire
. Jerry is working with Rod to help him get back to why he really started the game. He asks him, “What was the reason you started playing to begin with? Was it the money?”

There is a statement I hear, “I cannot make enough.” If you’re in your business just for the money you have already failed. If you want to live a dream you have to have a dream. Get back to that simple dream. For me it was a simple dream, I wanted freedom. No matter the venture I went after, it was freedom that I was seeking in doing it.

I learned to find the basics and they are that I love to get up in front of a room and watch the eyes of people when they become inspired by me telling my story and sharing ideas of Rock ‘n’ Roll Change. So where is it at for you? What’s that simple thing you must get back to doing?
