I want to finish up this week on our theme of purpose. It was 10 years ago that I got my first look at a book called The Purpose Driven Life. It took my life to an entirely different level in learning.
I want to leave the theme with a thought that we should all have in mind when we think about purpose. In the mind of the entrepreneur we must always start with one thing: begin with the end in mind.
So let’s think forward to the end and, with that in mind, let’s define the purpose in your life. I want you to picture your last day on this earth; you are lying on your death bed and your family is around you. What do you want your family to say to you at this moment in time? What do you want the world to know about your life? What will be the record of you living on this earth?
This is a kind of gut-check time. The last thing you want to do is go to your grave without writing that book you always said you wanted to write; without working for that dream you always said you had. You don’t want to take the message you have and always said you were going to share with you to the grave just because you never got it started.
You are still alive now and no one knows what day will be the last one. It’s time to head out and change the world you are living in – NOW. We finish our week on purpose with me telling you to start from the end and work your way back. This should give a great picture of what you need to accomplish before you leave this earth.
Take some time today and write a message to the world as if you had to say goodbye. What would you say? If I had to, I would say this:
I have had some ups and downs; my life has shown success and failure. If I should leave this earth right now I want you to know that you still have music inside of you. My song has ended and it’s your turn to carry on. I do not regret anything. I lived while I had the chance; I enjoyed it all the way, the good the bad and the exciting.
I love my wife, I love my daughter, I love my wife’s boys. Mom gave me life, dad showed me how to be a man. My brothers fought to teach me how much we really matter to one another.
