lincolnLast week I went to see the new movie, Lincoln.  If you read my posts, you know that motivation is one of the biggest things in my life and I’m always looking to learn something, looking for ideas to write about, looking for ways to think of my life, and how I can make it better.

While watching the movie I thought about where we have gone as a country since the time Lincoln was president. I watched and thought about how the movie showed it was such a struggle to get the 13th amendment passed. I thought about how we as a country see the results now, and I thought about how in the many debates to change the country there were always those who opposed the idea.

In the wake of last week’s tragic events in Connecticut, the air waves are flying with change in our world, the ideas of a ban on certain types of guns. Talks are brewing about the 2nd amendment. With a week of talking about the end I wanted to take us back to the beginning.

At this point in time we, are a very divided country. In many cases we have different views about how things should be handled. I grew up with parents who taught me, not always with words but with actions. Our country is filled with many who were raised the same way, and others who were raised to believe different.

But step back and take a look at any one of the rights listed in the Bill of Rights and our constitution. Each step the lawmakers of our land took was met with some people who were opposed to it. In some cases close to 50% were opposed to it.

Imagine, if you will, our country if any one of those things were not passed and the story went the other way.  Many times in my life I view the way things went and have to think back to the last fork in the road and ask, “What if I took that other fork?”

I am not writing this today to give you my point of view, or a side of the war that is about to break out on this.  It is time to think about what things have become in your life. I talk many times about making your own rules works if you are making choices for just you, or you and a spouse, or you and your family.

Those people who are the lawmakers have to make choices and rules for millions of people. The road to success starts with the end of putting yourself on the back burner and follow the rules. If you look back to any major change in our world, it started with a few people who believed it would be better.

Yes, the Mayans may have said it’s the end of the world as we know it. But the truth is we have to look back at life and say, “What if we made a different choice?” Not as a country but as individuals, you need to make your choices and be responsible for yourself.
