As I sit here tonight writing this post you will read tomorrow, I am thinking of what we have covered so far this week: the fact that we can get the feeling of being overwhelmed, that we get stuck where we are and just want to forget it all. Sometimes, we find someone who is willing to help, we take notes and listen, only to start another thing and become even more frozen in our tracks, feeling overwhelmed.
Yesterday we wrote how you need to take one thing at a time. We learned that even as we started to get things cleared up we would continue to have that feeling of being overwhelmed sometimes. We had to recognize at each step that it was just a feeling and put it in its place. Well today’s point is similar.
Even though you started working on that list of things you must get done to live your dream; even though you are working at getting things accomplished on that list to make your business a success, you are still feeling overwhelmed sometimes. Why is that?
The next step in this process is to understand and place your passion so that it is part of your plan and gives you direction when you are in the middle of those steps. Many of you will say you should have gotten the passion and plan in yesterday before you started working on the steps one by one; you should have had the direction first.
Well, we could have done that, but if you wait around to decide exactly what direction you are going, then you will go nowhere and never get started. So we had you start the list of things you already knew you needed to get done. Then we work to find a passion and direction knowing that you’ve already made steps to get there. Yes, I’ve felt that overwhelmed feeling. This month I have a new bride; last month I worked and spoke in four different states; this month I have an event to plan and next month as well.
Life is going to give you so much and you must get started on the things you have to get done to keep moving; once you start to check things off the list, you may then find a new path you need to correct and change – all as part of reaching your dream.
This brings me to the second part of today’s point: you need to shut out those outside noises that distract you from the plan you have. I’m planning so many things right now with many of the great friends I have who are speakers and authors. They can come up with some great ideas and they may think I should move in a certain direction, but they do not understand my path. So all they can do is give me suggestions. It is up to me to hear them and decide to use them, discard them, or modify them to be useful for me.
Do not let other people’s ideas become the new distraction that keeps you from moving forward. Too many times we start to listen to well-meaning friends who really do nothing more than distract us with great ideas.
In March, when I made some big changes to how I was going to take my business, I had many well meaning friends who wanted to jump on board with suggestions. Recently I had to stop listening to one who meant well but really was just working to sell me the latest thing they wanted to sell.
So many would take on the well-meaning suggestion and before long would become more overwhelmed. Well, stop it. It’s time to go with the path you know is going to work for you. Build what you started; know when you need to make the change and when you need to say, “Thank you for your suggestion,” but forget what they said. Your dream is way too important to let them distract you from it.
