As you know from last week, movies are some of the things that motivate me. I remember the movie, Erin Brockovich. The scene in the movie I love is when she just starts doing work in this law firm until one day the lawyer who owns the firm catches her and asks, “What are you doing here?” Her reply? “Well no one answers my calls, and everyone is busy when I stop by, so it looks like you need help.”
So how good are you at doing what you do? If you look across every part of your business, there are some parts that may not have been successful. When that happens, it all boils down to everyone coming back to you, the boss, and saying, “This is your fault. You are so busy that some important things are not getting done.”
In the movie, Erin Brockovich gets a job because she shows him that important things are not being handled, not just in her case but maybe in many cases around that firm. That helped her leverage a job that became a rather long-term position. She was able to do things that others could not do.
Many of my readers are self-employed entrepreneurs with great dreams and plans for success, but they are really bad at many of the jobs they perform. If you are not good at something, you need to hire someone who is.
Imagine if you were the manager at a large company and when you looked at all your workers you found that someone was not doing his job; it was costing the company money. Would you let them keep doing it? Or would you fire them and replace them with someone who could get the job done?
If you are self-employed or just starting out you need to get this concept right from the beginning. If you cannot afford to pay someone to do the job you are bad at, sooner or later it will cost you. The success of your company is totally dependent on you.
If you must learn a task to keep from failing, then do it. If you cannot figure it out, start now and help yourself out by hiring someone who can. This may not mean you have a full-time or part-time staff member. Many start-ups outsource the small things one part at a time to get them done.
A responsible entrepreneur knows how to hire and staff his dream company to make it successful. He knows when they can do things and when they need to be outsourced to someone who can do it better.
Today’s challenge is this: what have you been doing yourself that you should really hire someone else to do? My own coach encourages me to use sites like Elance.com, Fiverr.com and many other places where you can get people to bid on miscellaneous jobs for a small price to do those things they specialize in. You can even look on CraigsList to see who in your community can handle that one thing you are just not that good at. Remember, your success is riding on the fact that you know when to get the right staff for the job.
