So many will search and search for the most meaning of gifts this Christmas, and every Christmas till the end of time. I love this song because of the fact it teaches us that sometimes the greatest gifts we have are our talents.
The version of the song that inspires me the most is with David Bowie and Bing Crosby. To very popular singers from 2 different generations get together and do a duet. It reminds me that Christmas is about celebrating old traditions, but as we grow older and outlives change we need to make our own traditions.
I love the story in this video where David Bowie tells of old singers he likes and mentions John Lennon, and Harry Nilsson. Then Bing says you go that far back?
With this one song two men introduced two different generations of music to the other. Both were introduced to the others fan base in one song together, now those that would never have listened to either will look up the others music.
I love my life now as I am starting to look back to the many classics that I enjoyed as a child along with the new classics. I like how this version is done with 2 songs put together as well. We all talk of peace on earth, this song as well. It also mentions the little drummer boy who the only gift he could give to the king was his gift of playing his drum.
I hope you make a gift of peace on your part of the earth this Christmas day.
