So I was thinking of the lyrics to the song “Take It Easy” a few weeks back as I was riding through the town of Winslow, AZ. The words “take it easy” rolled through my mind – like they probably did for you as soon as you read them.
Today’s post is not actually about the song; it is about another thing that holds the entrepreneur back. Now, before I give you this great piece of wisdom and make you think that I have never done this thing before, I’ll tell you that, yes, I have fallen into this trap once or twice. Here’s what can happen:
You see things starting to roll in your new venture and you get so excited you start thinking, “I can take it easy, take a break from it all.” It’s like the old breath of fresh air, sitting back in a reclining chair and getting the feeling that you are on easy street now.
This year my business has had some great growth. I can say that many more people have come to read these posts each day. I have gathered some great marketing tips from trusted sources and I’m being invited to speak in more and more places, more places to get connections. More people being helped.
But just because you see that in your venture, this spike in business does not mean you get to take it easy. Now is the time to add staff, to build a team that makes this venture grow then you all work together to take it to another level.
I remember back years ago when a few friends of mine had received a significant sum of money after selling off a business venture. They could have sat back and stayed on easy street. Well they didn’t. Instead, they bought a new home, they updated their cars, got the kids started in college. Then my friend jumped into serving on some boards, and he helped to build a charity project in south Dallas to keep it growing.
Now he has a new company and is involved in many projects that help build our city to a better place. I hear of places he is helping, including building our sports teams to championship levels again and getting the local businesses involved with those sports teams.
This year it seemed like things were going to take off and I was going to have it easy, but my life lessons from doing that before kicked in and told me that it’s time to work harder to push this project to the next level. It is so much easier to get growth when you have the structure in place for momentum.
So if your venture is starting to grow, use the capital to invest, to build. If you now have free time because you have grown enough to hire staff to do some of the smaller tasks, take your free time and invest it to make this venture grow even more.
RockStar are always working. Once they achieve the place of releasing the new Album (or CD) then it’s time to hit the road with a tour. Well if you have reached a place of success it’s time to take it to another level. You were put here for a purpose and reaching the small goal is only a step to reach that purpose.
