In a week about changing our world for the better I was reminded this week about what kind of person I was 20 years ago. My daughter reminded me that I made choices in raising her and she was wondering why.
Last night was Halloween; it was great to watch all the kids come and visit, but my daughter reminded me that when she was a little girl I was against this dressing up and celebrating Halloween.
It reminds me of how when I was growing up there were things that my parents would not let me do. If you heard me speak I talk about those things I was not allowed to do. I often share how we spend so much time trying to fit into a world where we do not fit in; how for years I was working and trying so hard to fit in based on those things I was told to do.
So what are you supposed to do that is really not you? What in your life have you held onto that you must let die. If you want to change the world that you live in, you must let the past die. Stop holding onto what others have told you to do.
The secret to being a successful entrepreneur is being yourself, being true to yourself. That is also the key to being a great coach. In coaching school, they call it coaching from center. It refers to finding out who you really are and working on helping people achieve their best based on that.
Once you’ve done that, you begin helping others get to where they want to be based on your experiences. I often hear stories of other coaches and how they found strength in themselves, then went on to help others who ask for help after seeing the changes in them.
It’s important to do both: making those changes in ourselves and leaving the past behind; then helping those we meet make changes as well. But we could never have learned, could never have been at the point of being able to help others, if we had never opened up to change ourselves. We could never have built the strength, if we had not failed first and found we needed to make corrections in our own lives.
So if in your past you have something you wish you had not done, it’s time to live and let it die. What are you going to let go of from your past so you can grow towards changing yourself? How are you going to change the world by first making changes you need in yourself?
