It’s time to put a stop to the idea that those who chase and achieve dreams are selfish people. Yes, I’ve known a few people who believe this. We need to turn the tables, show the truth that those of us who chase our own dreams are also working to inspire others. Dreamers may have a reason they want something, but the main thing that needs to be remembered in any dream is you get what you want if you first help enough other people get what they want.
That great quote by Zig Ziglar has been the inspiration behind so many dreams. Those who are pointing fingers at the dreamers and saying how selfish they are never really look at this one part of a dream. This week, as we hit reason number two in the topic, Never Give Up, I want us to remember his world needs to be inspired by dreamers.
Yes, I want to be successful at what I do. Yes, I want to have the money that goes along with success. But that money does not come along unless you really help people. Yes, I have people tell me I’m selfish in chasing the dream. Yes, people have told me I seem to be building a dream just for myself.
But back to the statement: before you can get what you want, you must first help enough other people get what they want. If you own a store that sells food, you must sell that food to help those who are hungry get fed. You then get profits that you take and buy your own food. In motivation, we inspire others to make the changes in their world. We show them it’s good to dream.
So today’s reason to never give up is that the story of your struggle is what is needed to inspire someone who will come after you. I have not met the real Rudy from the movie but I have heard his story many times. I also heard that when he wanted to make the movie it was not so he could be famous but to inspire other young kids to go after their dream.
You see, if you give up on whatever you are struggling with, if you quit before you reach that success point, how many others will never get to work towards a dream because they did not hear your story? I may not have done great things like some of the great football players; I may not have made it to a great college and played with a great football team like Rudy, but I struggled to reach my dream, and as I reach each mountain top in it, I will use it to inspire others to reach for every dream they have.
A dream may be a small thing to you, but your story of reaching that dream may be the inspiration behind the next great leader. Your story of what you are doing now could be what motivates the world-changer in your industry. If you quit, then you are selfish.
