I love a good movie; some of the Will Ferrell movies are such a great laugh. I want you to think of all of his movies right now. What is your favorite? I loved him in Elf
. My wife prefers Anchorman
but I have never seen the Ron Burgundy one. I kind of liked Step Brothers
, but the one that keeps me laughing each time I see it is Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
. Think of the line his dad tells him in that movie that motivates him:
If you’re not first, you’re last.
So many things about that line and what we are trying to teach our world just does not match. But that is what motivated him to win. It kept him thinking and driving fast.
I know the story really does not fit here, and many of you are wondering why I put it in today. Look at the title of today’s post again. The first thing that came to my mind after I wrote the title was that movie.
What is this post about? This year I have attended well over 20 business, personal growth, and life-changing seminars and boot camps. I have spoken in many different cities, and had the chance to meet some wonderful people. I have read about ten books that I never read before. There is one quote in particular from my year of reading that I think of the most and that is from the T. Harv Ekers book, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.” It is one of his success principles.
Rich people are always learning and growing; poor people think they already know it all.
As we finish up this great week about improving now, I want to focus on this last thing that is part of any successful personal growth or business plan: you must always be learning and growing. No, I do not know it all; yes, I need to read more books, and yes, I will gladly take a copy of yours if you wish to send it to me.
I may not be the biggest name in speakers, but I will be the biggest student of how to make my life better. I find that more and more people I meet want to ask me for advice because they want me to help them solve a problem. The people who know me or read my writings know I solve problems.
In fact, I heard a great thing this week about solving problems. It told of all the millions of drill bits sold at your local Lowes or Home Depot. Not one person who bought that drill bit actually wanted the bit. What they wanted was a hole and that was the tool to get it for them.
You see, many people want to improve their life and business. They say they want to grow and they can tell you the areas they want to grow in. They can tell you the problem they want solved. But they are not willing to actually invest in the drill bit. When you suggest the tool that will help them get the hole they want, they reply with, “Sorry, I’m not looking for a drill bit or a coach.”
If you are looking to solve a problem in your life, look for a coach or mentor who specializes in solving the very problem you are facing. Read the books that can give you insight and develop your mind to solve the problems you face. Many coaches have books dealing with the problems they solve.
Take this week’s ideas and apply them to your life. Improve your life and business now.
