This week is a great week for making me think about what it is that I do and how I am so lucky to be able to share with the world my skills, not just in this blog but in my coaching business. We are finishing up another month, the second month of 2012. First, if you were born on this day or if you have this day as your wedding anniversary, as some of my friends do, I must give you a special shout out today. And please go ahead and tell us about it in the comment section. After all you get to celebrate your special day only once every four years on this date.

Moving on with the theme of being different, the fact that this day on the calendar is only used in leap years definitely makes it different. And it’s part of the reason I chose this week to use this theme. As mentioned above, some people have February 29th as a birthday and that makes them really different. If you chose to get married on this day you made a bold statement that you are different.

The song title that we are going to use today is back to the man in black, Johnny Cash. It’s interesting that the title of the movie about Johnny Cash was not “Man in Black” as you might expect. Instead, it was from another one of his songs:”Walk the Line.” In a way the song is a love song but we are not going to focus on that today. The title of the song is all we are going to use.

In this world, we can use our differences to build a brand that is personal, something we will be known for alone and no one else. But if you want to be successful at anything it will involve some discipline for you to reach your goals. You will have to put yourself on a path to reach success.

I was recently asked by someone how they could market what they do while dressing and having a RockStar image like mine. I must say that for me to be a speaker and coach as I am to a professional world was not the easy path. I took many long paths that did not bring me an income and did not make me the favorite to be picked. It took a line of discipline to get my idea out. It took having another form of income to support myself to get here.

You can be what you want to be; you can find a market like this to work with but you must have the support system in place first to get there. You then have to make a consistent line to get yourself out to the world. If you check out rock stars from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, many of them had to push a line where they worked a job they didn’t like to get the income to keep the roof overhead. They practiced their music on a regular basis. They did crazy marketing stunts to get the name of the band they played in out in public. When I was working with bands in the clubs of Philadelphia, I recall a bar band going on a morning radio show for a dating game. I personally knew one of the band members was married. He was able to rig it so he was not picked for the date, but he still did the publicity for the band.

In your life of being different you are going to have to walk a line that will get you the promotion that you want. Yes, you may have to do something as crazy as being on a radio show for the weekly comedy skits they play to get your name out. You will have to be persistent, in some cases taking on speaking jobs that you really do not see yourself fitting in.

Actually I am talking with a former rock star focusing on putting things in place to build a life. Many of these rock stars have to recreate themselves in a market they are not good at. But to get there they are walking the line of that market to get to the new set of goals they want to reach.

So it’s the 29th day of February 2012; it’s a different kind of day. This means it’s a leap year. In America we will elect a new president this year, and when this date comes around again we will be talking about how the winner did, and talking about another group running for that office. To put it into perspective, you need to use the different you, build a line to walk to reach your goals. The world is going to change; you need to find your place in it and build a discipline system to get you there.

I’m Tim Gillette, the Rocker Life Coach; it’s time to live your dream, to love what you do and those you share life with. Be consistent with your different dream and become the RockStar in your world.
