Happy Tuesday to you. It’s the second day of the work week and was probably my least liked work day, back when I did the Monday-Friday thing. Monday was always hard but there was a sense of having had a weekend to recoup. Tuesday was the day I always realized just how long the work week was.

Now, of course, I’m not working a typical job; instead, I’m doing what I love – working with other people to help them find their dream and working with them to achieve that dream. But if you aren’t doing your dream job, if you feel the work week goes on forever, if you don’t feel fulfilled by what you’re doing and if you can’t wait for the day to be over, then you probably aren’t doing your dream job.

Today’s blog is about making a start on finding your dream job. I’ve actually written a book devoted to this topic called “Workplace Warrior” and you can find it on Amazon to get the full treatment of this topic but I want to offer you a few tips to help you.

Whether or not you’re currently working, you can look for your dream job if you don’t have it now. But before you can find your dream job, you must know what your dream job is. It sounds too simple, but it’s very important. To make that decision, you need to know as much as possible about what is required by a job. For example, you may think you want to be an actor because you love the idea of being a star, but as you study the life of most actors, you will realize that very, very few of them are actually well-known stars. Now, if you love role playing, love the craft of performing different roles, love interacting with other people playing roles, love to bring other people’s stories to life, then being an actor probably is your dream job.

When you’re choosing a career, a vocation, a dream job, before you completely immerse yourself in it you want to make sure it’s really what you want to do. Do this by talking to people who are in that business. Take classes or see if you can spend time at work with someone in the field you’re interested in. You don’t really know what a job entails until you’ve spent some time doing it. If you’re contemplating quitting a job you have now for something new, you want to make as certain as possible you’re leaving for something you really want.

Once you’ve decided what your dream job is, what you really want to do, then you need to decide if you’ve got the skill, the education, the experience to get a job in the field you’ve chosen. If your dream job is working for yourself, you need to be sure you can position yourself to devote the time and other resources needed to give it all you can. I find it helpful to make a list of all the things I can think of that I will need in order to make a job work for me. Include things like what the salary range is, whether or not you need a college degree, how long you should expect to spend working your way up the ladder. Knowing these things will help you get a realistic idea of how long you may have to spend at a job that may not be your exact dream but that is essential to ultimately achieving your dream.

When it comes to your dream job, you must be willing to work for it. A lot of people may say they’re willing to work, but when it comes down to the reality of work, they’re not as willing. But when it comes to pursuing your dream, if it is truly something you’re passionate about, you’re willing to work at what may seem like menial tasks to an outsider so you can achieve what you want.

The question, when it comes to any aspect of pursuing your dream is “How badly do you want it?” Only you can answer that question but if you aren’t willing to work, to go through tough times without giving up, the dream you’re pursuing may not be that meaningful to you.

In my book, “Workplace Warrior,” I go into much more depth and detail about the elements of determining what your ideal job is and how to go about finding it. I invite you to take a look and see if it doesn’t help you clarify your vision and give you some solid ideas for pursuing your dream job, your passion.
