I wanted to do a weekly theme of planning. It’s one of the steps in my guided program. We talk so many times in life and in many different areas, about planning. There are hundreds of professional planners out there from wedding planners, to event planners, to business consultants who help you plan out your business.

Well more people than you would think come to me all the time without a plan and want to be successful at life. We all want to be successful, but so many want it without making a plan to get there. The idea that we can make it happen without planning some steps along the way is the worst plan you can make.

Some of us think we can just get out and start working and expect a plan to come together for us. Trust me on this: it is one way to keep yourself running in circles with no hope of hitting the target you want. I have tried to run my life and business this way; it just frustrates me.

I want to think of a plan like you would think of a bullet being shot at a target. As I grew up, my father taught us to target-shoot. I remember the first time I went skeet-shooting with my dad.  When you are shooting skeet you use a shot gun; it shoots small pellets which scatter the farther they get from the gun. By contrast, when shooting target with a solid bullet, you can shoot to hit the target at a farther distance.

Imagine your plan is to hit the bull’s eye of a target, and you are using the shot gun which will not go as far. Too many people in life are shooting at the target they want to hit with a shot gun and hoping that it will make it as far at the bullet of, say, a .45 caliber.

It is most common to have people tell me of having no plan and great goals, or a great dream. They have no idea how they are going to reach such a goal. When I was putting together this program for our workshops, it focused on the idea of finding the passion, defining the dream. Then you need to plan out how you are going to get there.

Well this week we are going to have five things about planning to reach that goal or dream. Today we need to understand that if you have no plan, you will not reach any goal in a matter of two months – a short amount of time. It takes time; first you must make the goal, and then write a plan to reach it.

Next week we will talk about the ideas of change. As I looked back over my life in the past 20 years, I was looking at how far I have made it. The times it would just “come out better” on its own, those times I was just shooting in the dark at an idea of a plan, there were so many things I really fell short on.

So this week let’s focus on getting a plan to get your life to where you want to go. We all know where we are, we know where we want to go. It’s this stuff called life we are living in right now where we need something to guide us towards that goal.

So how is your plan to reach the goals you have set for 2012? Are you one who has no plan in place to make that happen yet?  Take a piece of note paper and write down a short outline of how you will reach your goals this year. This is your beginning plan.
