musical_notesI was thinking of the song, “Piano Man,” by Billy Joel. One by one in the song, Billy Joel describes the people in the bar — who they are, what they are doing, where they feel they have failed or succeeded. Hearing the stories makes you think.

So, sitting in the Starbucks today having my usual cup of espresso, I looked around me. Like that Billy Joel song, I could tell you so much about so many of the 20+ people sitting in the room.

I get to know people by starting conversations, talking with them. It’s part of what I do every day, but looking around today something caught my eye. Do we really know who is around us? Do we know who can help us change? Are we willing to make the changes needed?

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

 ~ Barack Obama

Today two people were sitting in the corner; one man has been on the edge of homelessness for months. Each time I talk to him I hear his struggles to just find that next job to keep him in his apartment a little longer.

Many opportunities are offered to him each day. It makes me wonder how many he turns down. Most times when making suggestions to people like this man, they turn them down. They are quick to jump up and tell you why this or that will not work for them.

Now for the other side of the story. The man sitting next to him is one of the top income earners in a multi-level marketing company. He was one of the first 100 to get in and he is the second highest income earner in his company.

So who are you sitting next to? Who in your life has the solutions you need and when was the last time you looked around to see? Have you been the one who has turned down your opportunity for change by automatically saying, “This is not for me.”?

You must stop waiting for the change you need to make to seek you out. It’s time to speak up, look for where the changes need to be made and begin making them. Who are the people, what are the solutions that you have passed over? It’s time for you to make the change.
