I am writing this week’s theme about how we need to work, we need to never give up. As the closing ceremonies marked the end of the Olympics in London, life should be back to normal. But wait. Can we afford to take the breaks? Can we afford the vacations we are taking?

I received an email last week from one of the coaches whose mailing list I subscribe to. Carrie Greene shared a great thought that made me ask myself, how many businesses will fail this year? How many people who are self-employed and started within the past four years are now throwing in the towel?

It was mentioned that August is a month when many businesses fail. And, yes, I’ve lost or given up on businesses of my own in the month of August.  For so many, they are about to send the kids back to school, they are looking back on another summer of taking it easy in so many ways in life and they now find they have to throw in the towel and get a job. They have to give up again.

So I want to ask you this: how big is your dream this year? Did you take a vacation that you thought you deserved? We have put vacations off for our work. We have felt that hard put down when we really wanted to do something, or go somewhere. Gwynne loves to go to the beach and this summer we have not been able to make it.

We did get married this year, and we have taken a few small trips. But this year we have worked harder than in years past. Our dreams have become more defined; we know that things we give up now will bring rewards later. When you are an entrepreneur, you do more work to build, but later you get more freedom.

I know several entrepreneurs and speakers out on the West Coast who have grown their businesses to a point they get to take different vacations.  One of them now regularly takes off four-day weekends. He is a multi-millionaire, and there are times he works only weekends — like when he has his boot camps.

Then another speaker I know takes every June and July off to spend with his young family. But as soon as August hits, he is back to work harder than ever to kick off another busy few months.

You see, when you spend years building up your system to provide an income for yourself, then you can build a life on your terms. Yes, we read the books like Four-Hour Work Week where Tim Ferris explained how he gets to travel all the time, but he also tells how he worked for years to get to the point that his life was set up to live that well.

August is not over; if you do not have your life set up to be taking it easy, now is the time to be working harder to get that system of success built so next year you can start living life on your terms. Come back this week and see other things you need to keep on working on.

I’m Tim Gillette, the Rocker Life Coach. It’s time to live your dream, to love what you do and those you share life with. The month of August is not time to take it easy if you want to be the RockStar in your world.
