How many people remember the guitarist Matt Smith? I know many who will do a Google search to see who he is; some old rockers will remember the name.  Matt was the original guitarist in the band Poison.

Four men from Mechanicsburg, PA left for Los Angeles in the early 1980s. They made the tough journey, then did everything they could to get that one break in the music business – working the Sunset Strip clubs. It was just before their ‘86 debut that Matt Smith would leave his friends, Bret Michaels, Bobby Dall, and Rikki Rockett, to head back home when the road seemed too hard.

The guys searched for a replacement; rumor has it Slash was one of the guitarists who tried out, but it was C.C Deville who would replace him. The rest, as they say, is Rock ‘n’ Roll history.

Now there could be all kinds of arguments that he was the missing piece needed to make the band the success that they are. Or it could be said of Matt that he gave up just before the point of success happened.

I want to focus on how many times in life we have given up just before success was about to happen. How close are you to success with the dream you may have? What is your point of giving up? Some people go through a bankruptcy before they have a dream hit. Some lose houses, cars, lives; they lose so much just for that one success.

This week I was doing some research on how many life coaches and other coaches who started a business in the past five years have left it. When I look at the business studies I ask, how many businesses come and go in less than five years?

So with that the idea of “almost” is our week’s theme. Today we hear the words “almost famous” and we may think of the person who tells how they were so close to success that one time and then they gave up.

As a world we just give up too easily. So this week we are going to talk about five instances where people have reached the “almost” in life and then gave up. Let’s think about this: what if they took just one or two steps more and reached even a small level of success that drove them on to changing the world?

Take out a note pad this week and let’s look back at what you could have done to make it just one or two steps more to reach success in your life and business.
