Too Much Time on My Hands

116x2Having too much time never seems to be the case. The problem is usually that people cannot find time; they seem to have a lack of it. We cannot seem to find the time to do those things we need to get done, let alone find time to do extra things that will bring us the dream.

In this week focused on barriers that keep us from moving to the entrepreneur dream, time can become a big one. Many people once starting down the road to a dream find that so many things can be put by the wayside due to time.

Time is something that could stop you or it could make you a more efficient person. A few years ago in the famous book, 4-Hour Workweek, removing “time-costly” things is something that Tim Ferris recommended.

But what if you have things you cannot remove? Some have that several-hour commute each day to and from the job they need to make ends meet. Some have to take care of family things, from the cooking to the cleaning to getting the kids ready for school.

Time management is not something that has a cookie-cutter solution for everyone. There are important things we must do that matter to us. We need to find the time to do what matters, and still get things done.

I have heard time and time again that those who wish to reach a dream in life may have to give some stuff up for a while to live a better life later. But where do we draw the line?

I have found that the way I do things in life may take a little longer, but I would rather enjoy the journey than give up all those things that bring me joy now just to reach a goal a little bit quicker. We’ve all heard the adage that you never hear of a person on their deathbed saying they wish they’d spent more time at work instead of with their families and loved ones.

Becoming an entrepreneur is a dream life, but it’s not a life that is made up of all the free time in the world. Entrepreneurs do not all have pockets full of money either. Entrepreneurs are people who get to do what they want and what matters to them is also what they need to do to achieve their goals.

You see it’s the journey that matters, and going through the tough times will happen, whether you live the entrepreneur life or not. You have to find the solutions that bring your life to the kind of life you want.

If it takes a little longer to reach those dreams you want, but you get to enjoy the journey along the way, why not do it?  I’m going to enjoy the moment, spend time doing it my way and work towards that dream at the same time. But the journey is part of that dream.

When you look at the barrier of time that way, you get to live the dream even when time is not on your side. It’s time to enjoy the time you have. If there’s not enough time to enjoy, slow down and take smaller steps.

Are you Ready to Finish Strong ?

So yesterday I was thinking about how I wanted to finish up this week and one of my mentors, Rhonda Hess, posted this on Facebook:

When you have a successful business you become picky about who you coach, where you speak publicly, where you network, and how you market. You treat every hour of your time as if it were equal to a large sum of money and make sure that for every effort you’re getting a high return on your investment. Why not start those good habits now and see what happens?”

Rhonda Hess is the Prosperous Coach; if you have read some of my past blogs, you know her encouragement to find a web name that describes you is why I’m the Rocker Life Coach. She posted the question above yesterday and it made me think.

To make an investment in anything in life you must put something – money or time – into something you do not have yet. We have to start somewhere; we have to take a risk. We need to do this when we think we don’t have a chance without it, but we need to invest before we start feeling like it.

So many times I talk with people and ask them to make the investment in building their life to a better place. This is why so many clients become so much better after they take action. Coaching and coaching programs are designed to do just that. When you invest your time or money you will work harder because you do not want to lose that investment.

I started Rocker Life Coach in the spring of 2010, but I really started coaching many years ago according to Zig Ziglar. Over the past three years I have offered “Free” Coaching to many people; they always have an excuse to why they can’t get started and I know it’s because they never have anything invested.

This made me think that just everyone is successful; they just have a different description of success than I do. For some, success means they can buy a toy; others call it success when they can have money to buy beer on Friday. I think of success when I take what I have and invest to learn more.

Just last week I ran into someone I worked with many years ago. He was still doing the same job; he still was telling me how he wished he could live the life I do. He then asked if I would share my secrets with him. Of course, that’s the idea of coaching. The same day, Charlotte Ann met with me for three hours, investing in her future and asking me how to improve. She then invested her time into her new programs, time into building a business while she is looking for a new job.

So many people will not jump at the chance to make the investments needed, they will go to everything rather that invest the time to find the places that are right, just like Rhonda mentioned yesterday on facebook, “ why not start that now?”

When you ask me for places you need to go to get your business running, take a serious look at what I recommend. My friend Andrea Adams Miller did that for me last month when she recommended I attend a boot camp by James Malinchak. I want to say it was not easy for us to take money out to get hotel rooms, to get flights and to pay for meals. I made the investment to learn more. I came home from the event and made changes in things I do that already bring more money in.

A few months ago Craig Duswalt told me to invest in his boot camp. I had done things with Craig but had never been to his boot camp live. I made that investment, and then with what I learned I was able to create our RockStar Dream Life Seminars and started with the first one in Dallas. I was able to make that money back from investing in Craig’s boot camp.

Now I have new clients who are seeing their investments come back in a matter of weeks. It makes me think back to the second day I was dating Gwynne. I received an email from Brian Tracy that had a quote from Thomas Edison that made the difference to how I do so many things now. Even Gwynne and I pursue so many things farther when we don’t feel like it because we think of this quote:

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

Thomas A Edison

So let’s finish this week up with a challenge from me to you: We talked about investments of time and money. Look at where you spend your time; ask yourself this question: where is this investment of time going to pay me back later? Is this a cost or an investment? Let’s say the average person lives to age 87. So take the number 87 and subtract the age you are now, with each investment of time think of that as how much you have left in time and ask yourself the importance of this investment of your time.

Also look at the money you spend each day. I show people in my seminars how to clean out clutter in life. Many of them say they cannot afford things but spend hundreds of dollars on cigarettes and snacks that are no good for their bodies. Even I had to look at how much I spend at Starbucks each week and cut that out to afford the investments I want to make to better my life. And I am cutting back on things I spent money on that are not returning the investment after a certain time. Time and money are important to me. To live a RockStar dream, we have to invest in those areas that help us to do so.

Decide that it’s time to start investing in you. Think in line of return on investment, what it will pay you in the long run. If someone is just wasting your time, stop letting them. If someone is taking your money and the service is not equal to the pay you give stop that service, get out of that contract. Have a great weekend.

Is This your lesson I found on the floor?

Investment is a term that really makes people think when you bring it up. They think about what you are talking about and really take it seriously. Before it was just about a small amount of time, or a small amount of money. Now they are starting to think about where this is this going in the long run.

In Tuesday’s, post we mentioned the two places that we look at for investing: our time and our money. Today we are looking towards the time aspect of our life. When you look at the time you have each day, how do you invest it to get the most of it?

If you are like most of us, in life you are in one of three places if you are going through a mess. We move from challenge to challenge in life. We have the before part when we see it coming. Most try to stop it at this point and hope it does not happen. Some actually try to avoid it; others are in denial, but still we see that it’s coming.

Second it the “during” part of it when we know this is a struggle, this is a problem, and we start to think, “How can I get out of this mess?” We usually spend more time pointing our focus toward just getting out of it.

Third is the “after” part. This is the time most people tell how they are so good at getting through the struggle they were denying in the first place. It’s the part when they tell how they are so good at getting through challenges because they stayed focused on solving the problem.

Well, it’s time to look at time. We have only so much time on this earth. We need to invest it the best we can. What if you were to invest your time on the problems this way? While you are going into the problem look to see how you handled problems before, look for solutions, look how it will make your life better in the during and after part.

Now when you into it rather than just focus on how to solve it, look at it again and see have I been here before? What am I suppose to learn? How can I use this to become a better person when the after gets hear?

Now comes the after, why not take this time to learn from what you have just faced. Make notes to improve your life. Invest in your future and how you will be successful at your future now that you have had the wonderful experience of going through a problem that you must solve.

The point is to invest in your future by using each and every thing that comes up as a way to learn, to grow, to serve others. Too many times we want to just get past the pain in life when it’s that pain that is meant to help us grow.  Invest in you by investing your time to make yourself better.

What Are You Investing In ?

I arrived back home last night after six days in lovely Los Angeles. I was out there to attend the Big Money Speaker Boot Camp, a wonderful event put together by the great leadership of James Malinchak. The biggest question I have been focusing on What are you investing in?

I love to attend events like this as they always give you great value. I believe each of these events I attend is an investment in my life, and my business. One of the people whom I was able to spend time with was a fellow attendee and an old friend, Patrick.

Patrick and I go way back to one of the first seminars I attended in the Dallas area, almost 10 years ago now. The Road Adventure is a great life enrichment seminar I attended where Patrick was part of the leadership. I made a great connection between that event and this one; I made an investment in myself to attend that event nine years ago. Now my life has drastically changed because of it.

So I wanted to take a week to talk on the subject of investment. It will be a short week – only four days of blogs, but they will show you investments in my life. They will show you that you can make investments that could change your life to live a RockStar dream.

Today I ask you this question: what are you investing in? So many of us never look at the two biggest things we need to invest in. How we invest these two things is what will show where success will be in our lives in the next three months to the next 30 years.

1.  Money.  Yes, you cannot talk about the word “investment” without talking about the word “money.” I have learned more over the past 10 years about how things I spend money on are investments. The seminar series I attended in 2003 where Patrick Dougher was a leader was full of people who could not afford it. Many had others pay for them; many just spent money on it, but I invested in it. The topic when I was there was about making changes in my life. When I put my money on the line, I wanted a return in my investment. That’s just like what I tell people about my events now: I talk about how they need to invest in themselves by attending my events. I tell them that coming to the event will give you information that will bring great changes to your life and help bring more money back to you.

2.  Time. I wanted to put time first and realized that we need to know how much more important time was to share with you. Just like this event I attended this past week, and the event from 2003 investment of time was a factor. My time is very valuable to me; many people come up and ask if they can pick my brain for free. Like I mentioned in the section on Money, many spend time and then complain they don’t have enough time. Many waste time.  I invest my time with those who want to make big changes. If I’m going to show people how to live a RockStar dream like I do, they are going to have to invest time to get there. It’s not an instant formula.

I want you to focus on these two investments: I will show you in all the posts this week how you can now track to see with money or time what is a good investment and what is a bad investment. You will have to make choices about where to invest your time and your money to get more time and more money.

I Changed My Life. Where Are the Results?

Each and every morning I walk into my favorite Starbucks and get my drink. Most days when arriving, by the time I get to the counter the drink is made and handed to me while paying for it. This is a great result to have when you are a coffee person like me. But you say, “Tim I’m sure you’re like a RockStar in your world, so they treat you that way.”

My home coffee shop has changed many times over the past 13 years of making the morning visit to get a specially-made drink to start my day. My drink has changed many times over those years as well. I can tell you that more than 100 baristas have made a drink for me. I am a regular; I was not always a regular.

The current coffee shop I go to now has Doug as a manager; he has built an over-the-counter friendship with me. I’m not all that special; he is this way with all of his customers. That is the Starbucks way, but if you visit small hometown or other coffee shops you don’t get that fast service. You sit at a table and place your order with a server and it takes 5 to 10 minutes for them to have your drink crafted.

I want to use this story to show you how our theme of change that matters is not an instant thing. The first time I went into Doug’s store I was not a regular, I had to wait in line to get my drink, I had to explain the way I liked it. When sitting at one of those cafes, you do not get it as fast; it’s not an instant drink like we get in the fast paced set-up of a Starbucks.

Well if you are making changes the results in life are not instant; change takes time to get results. It seems we have become this instant world; we want to have it in an instant. Well like the specialty café we need to create a better quality product of our life. If you want to change you health you must make long term changes that will yield long-term results.

Last month I got started with my own 90-day challenge in the Visalus system. It was not just a challenge to “take this instant shake and you will be healthy, take this magic pill and you will lose weight.” Well for me it’s not a lose-weight thing; it’s about building healthy long-term life habits. Getting involved with Visalus was about using a system that changed my life to my own challenge. I was introduced to it by one of my mentors in life, Craig Duswalt, who got involved in his own challenge.

Gwynne works with people in Weight Watchers, helping them with their system to change lives and become healthy. Losing weight is part of their goals. It’s a new lifestyle and just attending a meeting a few times does not bring about that goal you want. It’s over a length of time.

I used the idea of getting healthy and preparing for long-term change this month many times. Changing my health habits is just as important for long term as those who are losing weight. I am about to start a new long-term life with Gwynne as we are getting married this summer. Marriage is a long-term thing; it’s not just a one day event we invite all our friends to, and it’s about planning a life together.

So if you made changes in your life this year, but are not seeing results you want, you must look at the long-term.  When you look at the year as a whole, the changes made in the beginning of the year may not show the results till late in the year.

Over time, building the relationship with those people who serve me coffee everyday gets them to know me; over time the process is not a lengthy process to getting from my bike to getting my coffee. If you are patient you will see that building your relationships or building your world over time it will get better, it will get faster if you are building it to last. So keep working on those changes the results are coming if you continue each day doing the work.

I’m Tim Gillette the Rocker Life Coach; it’s time to live your dream, to love what you do and those you share life with. Make your changes long term and never give up; soon you will be the RockStar in your world.
