People Are People

The story is told time and time again about the dreamer who tells everyone at the family picnic about how they’ve just started a business venture. The person is so excited to find something that they feel is part of their purpose in life.

Then it happens. The well-meaning friends and relatives who know every mistake he’s made in life are so quick to point out how it will not work this time either. Today we are going to face down the toughest challenge or barrier of all this week. That is the wall or barrier of people.

While planning today’s post, I looked for ideas in many different places; after all, I am a person who wants to see you succeed so I want to provide as much information as possible. One thing I read through was the lyrics of the song that I titled this post after, and it encouraged me to look for words that will tell you that your dream is out there for you if you will step out now to reach for it.

I watched the movie again about the Bethany Hamilton story, and watched how her family was so supportive of her. That support didn’t come just as a result of her challenges in life, but for her entire life before that, too. Having the right people to support you makes all the difference in the world.

I mentioned on Monday about how only 20% of those with a dream will actually take action on their dream and start that entrepreneur venture. Usually those that actually start have some strong people in their lives, people who encouraged and knew the right language to help bring success.

No matter what your dream is you will have to be one of those who takes action to make that dream happen. You are going to have to get up and try; and when you do, you will hit walls, you will find barriers. You will not know what they are until you hit them and each of us has different walls.

If you have had a life filled with people who told you that you could not do it, then you are here for a reason today and I am here to tell you that you can be successful. No matter where you’re from – the Netherlands, Canada, France, Australia, or the USA – it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter where you are or what kind of life you have had. You can still succeed.

If you have a dream and have not taken the steps to make it happen, maybe it’s time to talk with a coach to get some support. Today is the day for you to stop letting people be the barrier to keep you from success. People are going to be people; don’t let them be the reason you give up on your dream.

Giving to Change Your World

Today is the middle of the week, and right now our world is in the middle of falling apart. So many times this year we have heard the jokes about those conspiracy people who talk about how the world is going to end on 12/21/2012.

Well the world is in the middle of change, and most will not do what it takes to make that change an improvement. When we look at a world needing our help, where do we draw the line of helping, and hurting?

So many things will be brought up about those running for office. No matter which candidate you choose, someone on the other side will tell you how that is wrong or how facts have been twisted.

Well the one thing that gets brought up sooner or later is how much do they give? It brings me back to a Biblical principle on giving. It says when you give, do not let the right hand know what the left hand is doing. So, if you find who is giving more being broadcast, remember that idea that giving should be something one does without looking for the recognition.

Many people are talking about the fact that some business people or entrepreneurs are paying less in taxes. I heard one thing mentioned today about how much entrepreneurs give away. You know, some of the wealthiest people are the ones that give away to help many causes move forward. But giving is not just about giving money.

Many people have the heart to give, but don’t have the money to give. Those are the ones that organize and plan or find people to give who didn’t know the needs. They know the needs but don’t have money to help. So they spend their giving resources with time spent helping educate those who have the funds.

So many forms of giving will change our world, but one will not: forcing people to give. Do not force people into giving something they are not meant to give. It takes out the feeling of service and builds an entitlement in the receiver.

The last thing I want to say about giving to change the world is that it is all part of the Karma of life. If you want to have your gifts received you must be a good receiver as well. So many have the great heart of giving to change the world, but do not accept the gifts of others. When you do not receive from those you are giving to, that tells that person you are better than them. It also takes away their joy in giving.

These are just a few ideas on how to change your world through giving. Giving is one of those things needed to be a successful entrepreneur; it is part of the training given at our live events. If you want to see how this idea works to become a RockStar in your world, invest in yourself by coming to our next live event here.

Just Say Yes

I just came off another fantastic week of education on business, marketing and entrepreneurship. It’s so good to see great mentors and friends, to take time and learn from many who have done things in their lives and made success from what life handed them.

A theme that struck me last week while at this event was something that I need to apply more in my life. I was reminded of this from my mentor and friend, Craig Duswalt, as well as many other teachers like Les Brown, James Malinchak, and Loral Langmeier, who coach people on being successful, excelling in business and managing money well.

The one thing I need to apply that they teach is to just say “yes” and find a way to make it happen. My wife has this down; she is the first to just say “Yes, we need to do that” then work to find the way to make it happen. Now you may think I’m talking money, but I found this theme needed to be applied in so many areas of life.

So I want to look at it in a few different ways. We’re going to talk about getting life moving and getting some feedback from you on ways you learned to just say “yes” and then find a way to make things happen.

This year I stepped out and just said “yes” to attending many of the events that I was putting off. I preferred to have the money in the bank before I would plan on attending the event.

The truth is, we shut a part of our mind down when we think this way. Our minds automatically shut off the creative side when we say “no.”  I have watched as many people look to build a better world with close-minded ideas.  Too many times we wait till we are backed into a corner before we make the choices that could make the changes we should have made months before to save ourselves.

So as we go through a few ideas this week, think of how your mind works. Have you actually begun a habit of saying “no” when you mean to say “yes?” Are you ready to open your mind to possibilities? Get ready and let’s learn together to say “yes” and find a way to make it happen.

Things That Hold Entrepreneurs Back

This week I wanted to share some things that clients were dealing with when they first came to me. I work with all kinds of different entrepreneurs, from the dreamer who wants to move towards a new business or make the existing one successful to the entrepreneur who wants to build a charity that helps feed the homeless of his town once a month.

They are all what I call dreamers and in my seminars I teach how to become a RockStar Dreamer. If you are going to have a dream, make it a big one. What I find that most people who come to me for coaching need to realize is that they have something that is holding them back.

Dreamers want to take the world on and that brings some hang-ups along the way. Today let’s deal with one of those hang-ups: they try to do too much.

Imagine you are sitting with nothing to do. You start looking at every single opportunity that is put in front of you and, as a result, get nothing done. As one of my coaches and mentors tells us, we need to focus and get things done. He uses an acronym for the word focus:

F= Follow

O= One

C= Course (of action)

U= Until

S= Successful

This is the reason that I start many of my clients off with lessons on cleaning the clutter out of their lives, getting rid of those things that are not working.

We also need to get things lined up to bring the success we want.

A man once said to me that he was told he could be anything he wants to be, but he could not be everything he wants to be. This becomes a problem with the entrepreneur as they are always looking for something that works. In many cases the dreamer must attempt several things until they find a niche that works for them.

So today, if you are a dreamer who feels like something is holding you back; if you feel you just came to get the launch part of your business going; let’s break it down and stop trying to do everything at once.

Time to learn

Welcome back from vacation. It was great to receive all the emails last week asking if I forgot to post. Well, I decided to follow my own advice from the week before and build a habit of relaxing. It was the first week I have taken away from my work in over a year. So now I’m back from a week off; I’m a married man, and ready to get back to work and achieve my goals. I’m set to take my business to higher levels.

One thing I remembered in the past few weeks was something taught to me years ago. I had forgotten it. It came back to me while I was with Jeff Fagin in his 2% club in Phoenix two weeks ago now.

One thing Jeff left written up the board while I was on the stage was a truth that every successful person must never forget. It was this statement: “Rich people are always learning and growing; poor people think they know it all.”

When was the last time you actually stopped to think, “I still need to learn more.” Yes, I have gotten stuck in years past, feeling like I know so much. But then I hear a truth from a friend that hits me between the eyes. We all still need to learn, and yes, we can learn from anyone. The day you stop learning is the day you start dying.

So I wanted to do a week-long theme focusing on five areas we need to always be learning, and we’ll start off day one with the simple fact that we always need to be learning. Last week I finally did it; we took the trip to the Apple store to buy the MacBook Pro. It is something I’ve wanted for some time, but I waited until it was the result of achievement. It was a reward for reaching a goal.

If you have switched from PC to Mac, you know that with the MacBook there comes a learning curve. It’s time to take all those years of learning computers and change it all. As I sat in the class at the Apple store recently and learned things that are different, I was surprised at the trainer, Erik. When someone would ask something, he actually learned a shortcut or two. He said even he learns things in these classes.

It got me to thinking how, as a coach and speaker, I learn so much when I’m helping a new client. It reminded me of the time I sat at an event with Zig Ziglar and watched him take notes from someone who he trained to be a speaker. It got me to thinking today we all can find learning opportunities everywhere. We must always be open to learning, no matter who it’s from.

So take this week of learning and find new ways to apply it to growth in your life. We can always learn from the newest person in the room. We all have something we have learned to share, and something others have learned we need to listen. Take this week and build learning back into your life.
