Stop Regrets Now

The director waits and waits for my response; I have a look that is puzzled while looking at the light at the top of camera number two. Why am I looking at the light and not reading the cards below? Then I hear that word that all of you hear when the filming of the movie is screwing up: “CUT.”

Again, my weak attempt to get you to think of that movie set, to think of a TV set or a show that is about to begin taping and you are the star, sitting in front of the camera. But your mind starts to wander, and instead of speaking your lines, you’re thinking of something else – maybe about all the people you have told you were going to do something big this time.

Life is filled with moment like this. People tell everyone in their family how this is the perfect business for them; this is the right path they need to take for their lives. But then you wait to take the action, you wait to start talking to the camera. All you had to do is simply read the cards and sound convincing.

In the real world you have no cameras; you have no team of people giving you the words to say; there is no light person to make it perfect. It’s just you. But you keep waiting and thinking about it. Your mind stays off somewhere else, daydreaming and thinking about whatever. Then it happens, in the movies they would yell “CUT” and come up to you and ask what happened; they try to get you back in the mood and try it again.

Well in life that “CUT” could represent anything that is a stopping point; anything that interrupts you. Imagine losing a parent, maybe losing a grandparent that you loved and cared for so much. That word, “CUT” gets you to thinking even more before you want to consider taking action again. You stop for a moment and get your thoughts together, and then it hits you. “I told my Dad I was going to do this.” Now you’ll never have a chance.

So many in life wait too long to get started on things they dreamed about, goals they set and ways they planned on living by now. The pain of regret becomes part of their thinking now. It’s time to act before more time goes by and you never get started.

Today is the only day you have, yet so many will read this and still will not act. Instead, they will watch another movie; take an evening off from working extra hours that would have helped to make a dream of researching a business. People will go and have another drink with the guys at the bar, maybe get caught up in shooting pool, while their son gets ready to head to bed waiting for Dad to come home and play just one game with him.

Life is too short to live with any regret. I watched a movie years ago where someone achieved a great milestone in his career, and said the only regret he had was that his dad didn’t live long enough to see him do it.

It’s time to take action. Your dream is waiting for you. In a world where many people can come and try to take that dream from you, you are the only one who can lose it. Today look at how many times you have been offered help to get going on your dream. The break is over, the director is about to yell “ACTION” again, are you ready?

Readyyy Action Dude.

There are 30-plus people staring at me. Right now I’m thinking about what all of them are doing: the three men sitting in chairs in front of me, the two men with lights on either side of them, and a man holding cards with large words on them. There are people with cameras in four different spots and some guy walks in front of me and about snaps my nose off with that little clip board thing.

I start to think, “Where am I and what am I doing here?” Who are all of these people and what are they doing? Some man shouts “Action!” I come back from my daydream and realize I’m supposed to read what’s on the cards and sound convincing.

Sound like your life? I was thinking about how many times we get a chance to make changes in life. I was thinking how many times people come up with opportunities for business and we sit and stare at them and look around with that puzzled look. They present us with something that requires the one thing we do not do: Take Action.

Well, life is not a movie set; it’s the live dress rehearsal that does not always give us a retake. Still we wait and wait to take action. Why? We are waiting for something better to come along. We are wondering, “How did I get here?” Well it’s time to take action.

Today I listened to a speaker tell a group they needed to investigate what people tell them. It brought me back to a preacher I knew who would give a chance at the end of every sermon to make a change in your life. Some would come forward and pray about what they knew needed changing. Others would just wait.

In today’s world we so often want to go home and Google things to see if what was being said was right. When I was a child, my pastor would tell us we needed to check the Bible to make sure he was right. He said we should never take his word for it.

But still there is a difference between those who are waiting to do research and those who are just putting off till tomorrow what they know needs to be done today. The bottom line is, it’s time to take action.

The short and, may I say poor, I’m sure, story of a person getting ready for a film shoot, was designed to get you to think of what it’s like before a director says that magic word to start recording, and playing out of a scene for a movie, or show, or any recorded event.

Well, this week we will take a few different looks at taking action in our lives, and in our businesses. It will be time for people to get up and take action if they want to change the life they have, to live the life they want. Love What You Do

Good Thursday morning. How is your success environment this week? One by one my posts have been about the important things that help us build success in life. They are not about what makes us successful, but what helps us build an environment of success.

Setting up your world for success takes some work. First we went into our home, then our relationships. Today we are going to talk about the work we do and setting our work environment up for success.

When it comes to work, first we have to address the fact that it is work. Yesterday we spoke about how we build relationships we want. Sometimes they take work to build, like your marriage or partnership. It takes time to get to know someone and work to build a strong relationship.

Today in the subject of doing work we love, it’s important to remember you may have to work at something you don’t like to get to what you do like. For years I have said you need to love what you do. In many cases I worked at jobs I hated, but loved the work. The idea is if you learn to love what you are doing, you do it better. If you are doing the part of the job that you do not like, it’s OK not to like it. You need to build an attitude that you love what you do and become a success at it. This is the biggest thing that I focus on with younger people: working at something for a while that you may not like and building it into a job you love.

I wrote last year about how I created success in almost every job I had. I learned to become successful at every place I was at. If you want to love what you do, then learn to work hard and be successful at those things you don’t like to do. When you shine at it, opportunity will open up for those jobs that you will love to do.

In many cases people will chase after you to find what it is they love to do. They will spend years getting fired from jobs they don’t like and the whole the time they could have worked those jobs to open the doors to what they love to do. When coaching people and having them search for the ideas to find what they love to do, I often hear them tell stories about how they bought into a business deal, or took a training course, or even attended an online or in-town workshop. They get through it and then find out they really hate the work.

So often these people spend years of their lives chasing the money and not the work. In life you will have to do some kind of work to maintain a living. Learn to love what you do and find a way to be successful at all things, let it open doors to things you love. That is the reason at the end of every one of my blogs I put the line “love what you do and those you share life with.” It is because no matter what you do if you don’t love it, you will not work at it.

One of the greatest things I learned in building success at work was told to me years ago by a man who started looking for another job because he hated where he was. When talking with a coach, that coach told him to find a way to turn his current job into a success and find a way to love it. The coach told him then he could also put the word out that he was looking for other jobs. Well he built a team and that team became the most successful team of sales people in the entire company. It was when they became the success that this man was offered three other job opportunities. After building his team and taking them to the top sales team, he started to love where he was at and turned down all three job offers.

The lesson to learn in this is you can build a world you will love. You build your success at the job, you find the place to work and love where you are at, and then doors will open up. But once you have built the place you are at, you may find you don’t want to leave after all. That is how people build a success at their work or business and find what they love. Build yours today, if you don’t like it once you are successful at it, then you will see offers coming your way. Those that are the best at what they do are in demand. Think about that: if you found someone who was successful would you want to hire them to run a division of your company? Or would you rather choose one of those that failed and have no job to bring your company to success? It’s time to build a job you love and make yourself in demand.

3 Keys to Define Habits

I am sitting on my patio today overlooking the lake at our home and the fact that I’m sitting in 60 plus degrees in the winter is awesome. In this part of Texas in the winter we never know what our weather is going to be like so it’s hard to plan for it. In my life I have several weekly things I do. One is taking a Friday night dinner ride with my fellow Harley riders. This time of year I miss some of the rides due to cold temperatures and the distance to ride back home in the cold after dark.

It got me to think this week about the habits I keep. The birds are on the lake and they seem to have their own world each day no matter what the temperature is; they do what they do by instinct. But we need to form habits that will carry us through whatever happens. So what are the things that we should keep in mind when forming the habits that will bring us success? I thought of three of them and want to share them today.

1.  Know the success you’re aiming for. We plan out a habit to bring success in our lives. So if you know what success you want, you know where you are and where you are going. You have to know the good that is coming from these changes. We all look at the goals we want to achieve but forget about the great things in our lives that the growth process brings on the way to the goals. So you need to know the success and the good that comes from changing your habits.

2.  Know the Struggle. In life when you make a change that is for the better it will often be a struggle. I once heard the description that when you set a goal you automatically set in front of yourself an obstacle as well. It’s not part of what we were thinking about when we set the goal but it will come. We never know what obstacles we’ll find, but we know they are coming. The key is to be prepared for a struggle and never take your eyes off the goal by putting them on the obstacle because that will divert you away.

3.  Do this for yourself. No matter what you are trying to change in your life it will not work until you do it for yourself. Too many people in life start to work on the problems, work on changing habits but do it for the wrong reasons. If you set your goals this year because someone else wants you to or if you are changing your habits to make someone else happy it will eventually fail. We have to make changes in our lives for ourselves. When you make those changes in life for yourself because you want to improve, it will bring you joy going through the challenges and struggles to reach a goal that is your own.

I hope this week has given you hope. Creating new habits and changing old ones to make your life better is another step on the journey to your success in 2012.

Habits and the Mind

Good Thursday morning. How are your habits going so far? In this week’s theme of habits, one of the key things is use of our minds to change our habits. I have told my story many times about how I decided to change my mind. I wanted to get past something so I used the power of the mind to change myself. Many times I have talked about the beautiful mind, how I use my mind to control things instead of taking a medication.

So how do we use our minds to change our habits? Well before we can use the mind, first we must remove all the temptations. Once you have the temptations to go back on the new habit removed, you get your mind ready to handle the tough stuff.

There are two ideas we use to get the mind ready and they both are needed to get your mind to establish your new habits.

1.  Meditation. You have to use the mind to focus on what it is you are going to change. If you are trying to remove a bad habit, picture yourself in your mind about to partake in the bad habit, then in your mind stop yourself; tell yourself you are not going to do that. For example, if you’re trying to quit smoking, close your eyes and see yourself about to light the cigarette. Picture yourself stopping and telling yourself that you don’t smoke.  If you are trying form a good habit then you must close your eyes and picture yourself doing that very habit. Let’s say you want to start getting up 45 minutes earlier each morning so you can read the newspaper before heading to the office. Then each night before your go to bed close your eyes and picture yourself waking up with the alarm. Then see yourself being tempted to stay in bed but getting up anyway. This is the way to visualize what you want and picturing the outcome you want.

2.  Affirmations. This is the other side of the coin. Now you have to focus on your positive changes. Affirmations are phrases that you use to give your mind a positive direction. Imagine if you were to take the exercise above, trying to form a habit of waking up earlier each day. You would picture it as mentioned above, but along with dealing with the temptation to snuggle back under the covers instead of waking with the alarm, you also include a saying like “I always wake up at 7 am to greet my day. I never need an alarm clock since I love mornings so much. I’m looking forward to what I will do with my extra time.” Habits are the things that change us, but you must condition your mind to get you into the habits that will bring you the success that you want in your life.

Take these ideas and take control of your mind. When people ask me how I do what I do, one of the key things I tell them is I take control of my mind. If I can tell my mind to do something, the rest is a downhill venture.  I hope this week not only helps you to get rid of those bad habits but take control of your mind and create some good habits that bring you success in 2012.
