Hire a Life Coach # 3

The middle of the week is here and it’s about halfway through the month of December. The year of 2011 is almost over and we are on Reason Number Three of the five reasons I am writing about why I believe you should hire a life coach.

Yesterday was an important day on this blog for me and it fits right in with today’s topic. The third reason I think people should hire a life coach is to stay on track with the goals they really want to accomplish. So how does our topic today relate to this week’s theme? Well you might have guessed that it has something to do with goals of mine. Yesterday was post number 240 for me on this blog and I passed over 7,000 views yesterday. But what were the goals I had for this blog for 2011?

In 2011, I wanted to reach 7,500 views and I wanted to have written 250 posts. Well it can still happen as the year is not over. But I cannot take it to another 500 views on my own; I need your help. If you follow us on facebook you may have noticed we have a “12 Days of Christmas” promotion going on. The challenge is for you to post a link for this on your page each day for the next 12 days and help me reach my goals. That’s the end of my commercial; back to the topic of the day.

When I talk about keeping your goals on target, I mean that we can all get very distracted with other things when we are trying to reach a goal or mission with our lives. For example, I can start off and make a step towards something in a particular topic, then end up writing an entire paragraph that has nothing to do with the day’s post. Things can end up taking you off track.

The reason I put that short story above about my blog was to prove the point about getting off focus on your goals. When I begin working with new clients on starting over, the first thing on my list is not addressing goals. First, I want them to clear their heads, to obtain a clear focus, to start cleaning up the mess they are in. Then we get to the future goals. In life you may have set many goals that you may or may not have reached. Why jump into a coaching relationship and continue at the same thing that did not work before? The problem isn’t always about not having goals; sometimes it’s about having too many or the wrong kinds of goals.

That is why I get those things out of the way first; then we get a clear view of what goals you want to really achieve in your life. Then we can focus our work to keep you on the right track. We can keep you from getting off on a path that is not consistent with the goals that you have presented, like I purposely did above to slip in and tell you about my blog goals. You see, me telling you about my blog goals isn’t only self-serving. Sure, it was kind of related to the topic at hand, but it really had nothing to do with the actual point of today’s blog – staying focused. It was a little off track.

So, as life coaches, it will be our job to keep you focused on reaching the goals you have set. When you tell us that you want to head in another direction, we will ask you questions, ask what your overall plan is. Imagine how many goals you could have reached! Imagine where you would be now if you’d had a life coach to keep you on target when you lost focus! Is it time to hire a life coach?

Hope and ?

What a great week on the subject of hope. I hope you have learned more about the word and its true meaning. Many people have sent me emails how this week has been uplifting for them.  When it comes to hope, it is a great thing when you are in business for yourself. So I want to make today’s post about the two words that were used in the president’s campaign in 2008: Hope and Change.

I like them together, for you see, when you use the word “hope” in your life, it should be about a change you are about to make. In life if you were to use hope in your life and you changed nothing to get it, well that would just be a waste. If you have not reached the goals with the tools you have been using, if what you have been doing has not worked, why are you hopeful for anything to change in your life. To get a different outcome, you have to change something.

We all have heard the old saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Let’s put that in Tim Speak: if you want more out of life get off your butt and do something about it.

Another saying that goes well with this is: “I will do today what others won’t, and I will live a life tomorrow others will only wish they could have.” Well to get ahead in life you may have to do a few things that you do not want, like the years I worked washing and detailing cars at the car wash. I had to work at it to put money away to start my own business.

Recently, I heard the story of a man who was general manager/ owner of a business in the Dallas area. While most others in a job like his would sit back and enjoy the title that comes with the job he did not. He worked harder to get ahead and saved his extra money. Then when he had enough saved he sold out his portion of the business and went and started another business in another town. See, he learned to do what the corporate world asked him to do, he took his small ownership shares, and he saved his money.

I have always had the hope in my life that, with my work ethic, I could build my own world starting from anywhere. Many times that line of “hope and faith” did not work. I trusted the wrong partners, made bad deals that did not benefit me. If you want to get past this in life, you don’t short cut and start to scam people to get ahead. Hope in yourself and belief in your work will bring you to the place you want to be, it just takes time.

So, as we close out this week on hope, I want to know what is going to change in your life in 2012? If you have the hope that 2012 is going to be a good year then you need to have hope in a better year, but make the changes to make it better.  With that have a great weekend. Come back next week when our theme is “Five Reasons to Hire a Life Coach.”  See you then.

What is hope?

You must work for it

Good Monday morning to you and welcome to another week. As 2011 is winding down, we are in the middle of the month of November already. Next week is Thanksgiving here in the USA. Many have been posting something each day on Facebook about what they are thankful for. I must say I am thankful that I was born in the country I was born in. I have met and talked with many of you from other countries and we all have pride in where we are from. No matter where your home is, there is one thing when it comes to personal growth that is the same all around the world: to be successful you must do your own work.

Recently, I was meeting with someone who was complaining that they did not have the resources needed to be successful. It made me think of the many things that I was given. While I’m not going to say my dad was a perfect dad, he gave me the tools I needed to make my life the success that it is. I feel no matter where you are from, who you had for family, you are given what you need to succeed. If you could not manage to do anything with what you have been given, that is your problem, not the fault of anyone else.

We all need to take what we have been given and make something of that before we can be successful with something else. This is why some people get a great education and then work a job that takes them nowhere in life. Then we see stories where men drop out of school and create a new world. We are given tools each day for our success but some will take an attitude that it’s not enough and will end up doing nothing; others will take the small amount of tools and build a dream that leaves those who know them best in awe of what they have created with it.

If you cannot get a good enough job, maybe you need to be building a life right where you are at. For me a few years ago, I could not figure what I was going to do next. I stood in my friend Donna’s office and she asked me, “So what are you going to do?” I told her I did not know. After a few months of trying different jobs, I finally gave up on trying to find some fancy job and took what was offered me. At 38 years of age I took a job as a barista at Starbucks. While moving up at a coffee shop may not be a dream to most, I found some great things. It was surprising to one day have people walk in and offer me jobs to run other companies.

When my daughter Jess moved to Dallas in 2006, she could not find a job here in the corporate world of north Dallas. So she took a job at a sports bar that was near our home. She worked lunches, dinners, afternoons whatever she could to start building her life. All the while, she was not sure if she was going back to school but she kept her attitude up while working at a bar. An office group from a local magazine came in to eat lunch on a regular basis and soon she was offered a job as receptionist at the magazine.

Many of us may hate the place that we are at right now. But you have been given the tools to build success where you are, in our world of bad times, hard times, poor economy, recession, depression. Your life is what you make it, if you want to leave this crummy job and get a promotion, or if you want to start your own blog, maybe even start your own online fishing goods store, it’s time to shine where you are at. Take the success tools you have been given and build from here.

This week we will go through a few other topics of tools that we have for making our lives a success. Walk into your job today with the attitude that you are successful right where you are now. Wake up to your mate and think “I am in the best relationship for me.” Look at your kids and say “I am successful and have a great family right now.” Stop looking at life and saying “If only I had a better house then  my garden would look nicer.”

Today is the day you change your attitude and make the world more successful with the tools you have already. You change your belief in the world by changing your attitude towards where you are now.

I’m Tim Gillette, the Rocker Life Coach. It’s time for you to live your dream, to love what you do and those you share life with. Change your attitude and use the tools you have to be a RockStar in your world.

Stop, Jump. Regularly

It’s Friday and it’s the last day of our week. At the beginning of this week I said we have eight weeks left in this year and it was time to act. The future is now so you need to take action and prepare. Then we talked about taking a chance so we stop wasting the valuable last days you have.

Today I want to bring up some thoughts from three past posts about how to use your last seven weeks of this year. They all have to do with what we should always be doing to make our personal world a better place.

1.  Stop procrastinating. We talked about this before: no matter how good your intentions if you keep putting off starting your future, you will only regret it later.  In life, many of us spend more time focused on the past, thinking of that time we could have made that big break had we only had the money, only taken and used our time. I have heard more stories from people that I worked with who told me how they had the chance to invest in things like Cable TV, grocery store savings card ideas, computer programs. I have heard so many of these. They always tell the story of how they wanted to wait to see how it went, then, when things took off they didn’t have the money to get in because they waited too long. Don’t spend your life wishing you had gotten in when the stock price was at $1.

2.  Take the jump. A few weeks ago we had a great guest post from my coach friend Janet. She talked about how she was at one of those rope climbing courses and realized she had to let go and take that jump. Well, if you have not let go of the things that you know are holding you back, you will not have your hands free to grab onto that rope and take a jump. What in your life have you been hanging onto that has kept your hands tied and not allowed you to jump into your own future? So many use the excuse of what someone did in the past, or hold onto what a parent said that was not meant at all to harm you. It was how you took what was said that keeps you from your success, it keeps you holding onto a rope that will not let you take the jump and reach the goals you have set.

3.  Establish a routine and stick to it. Do you have your routine set that will bring you a pattern of success? As I mentioned a few weeks ago it may be time for you to start a new routine. You have to develop a pattern that gets the results that you want to make that dream happen. If you have spent this year just doing what you feel like doing, you are probably less than half way to the goals that you wanted to get done. If this has happen a few years in a row, well I’m betting your pattern or routine is not a routine at all. Many people in life think they are going to be successful. They start a company of their own and after a year or two are selling everything they own to pay off the debt the company has put them in. If you are like me and you have goals, you have to set a routine to make them happen. If you wanted to write that book, have you set aside time each day to put your writings down? It was not until I made it part of my routine that I was able to make this blog happen every day, Monday through Friday. When I set a routine of writing and stuck with it, I then found I had more than enough other time each day to get more than just this blog done. But when I was acting on when I “felt like” doing it, well it was not a routine, and it did not get done more often than once a week, if I was lucky.

So in your life, it’s time to stop putting off till tomorrow what you can do today, let go of those things that you cannot control. Stop letting others hold onto your future. Let go of the past. Start taking the jump by starting a routine that gets the job done. I say this to keep you from living the start-over routine. That is when you do not act when you need to, and end up running yourself out of money and having to start over, again and again. I have done this so many times I am able to coach people on how to avoid it before it happens. 2011 is coming to a close; it did not end this year for you if you are reading this there is still a purpose for you on this earth. Take action to make it happen. Many people had life end for them, but that is not you. So take your life to the next level.
