How many can you get?


I am sure I have told this story before about how, when attending a seminar last year, I walked into the room on Wednesday night and, looking around, noticed over 400 people in attendance. I knew two people, but only from talking to them on radio shows and phone calls.

I decided I could do one of two things: I could just go through the event and gather the information and take it back home; or I could learn from the event and make a game out of how many people I could meet.

I chose to make a game of how many people I could meet. How many friends could I make? Well it became a fun four-day event after that. I did not set out to see if I could get business; I set out to make friends and that was good enough for me.

Whenever I talk to people for the first time they ask me about how I get so many people involved at my seminars or my events. They want to know how I know so many people. This is how: I use networking and seminars to meet people.

When I attend events with a lot of people I don’t know, I make some game out of the event to see how many people I can meet. I am not looking to see who is a possible prospect. I am not looking at the dollar signs on top of their heads. I am looking to find out who they are and what they enjoy about life, what is interesting about them.

When you make games of it you get to meet more people. If you make a game of how big you can build your list, or how many new friends you can make on Facebook, you automatically give yourself the mindset of winning at this game. When you look for ways to win the game, knowing you must get around obstacles to reach that goal, well, it becomes fun – just like a game.

For those of you who are wondering, I met close to 300 people at that event and some of those connections have given me leads that became clients.

So how many can you get? From names, to cards, to just friends on a social network, make a game out of making friends and see where it leads.
