Changed Forever

Changed Forever

911changeEvery day I teach people that the greatest thing you can do is learn something new. Things will happen to you today that you will question; you may not know why they happened; you may even shake your fist at God and say, “Why me?”

It was on this date 21 years ago that I left for work, excited to be able to ride my motorcycle to work that day. I was able to ride because I was scheduled to work in town for the week. The spring weather was just warming up and it was beautiful.

What would happen that day would change my life forever. I am not telling you this today to ask you to feel sorry for me. I have the most blessed life and, like my father, I can only recall a handful of bad days in my life.

By 9:00 a.m. I would be loaded into an ambulance, not knowing what was going on. I would later wake up in a hospital wondering how I got there. My family was outside my hospital room asking questions of what and why.

I was told that the profession I had chosen was over for me; I had to find a new line of work. I would find that most of the skills I had were useless, as those fields I was trained for did not want to hire me now with this condition.

I was told that day I had a form of Epilepsy, they called it a seizure disorder. I had experienced a seizure on a truck loading dock as a result of a head injury. I would not be allowed to drive an 18-wheeler ever again. Most of my skills were mechanical, so I was not sure if this was going to be a problem for me in that area as well. Not many places wanted to talk to me about hiring me.

When I talk about setbacks in life, yes, I have experienced them. This would be one of two times in life I would be removed from my place of employment by ambulance. Because I refused to accept this, I worked my way back into the trucking industry illegally, only to be taken away by ambulance again nine years later, after another seizure on the job.

It was after the second instance that I learned to accept the true fact of who I was. It became time to really face this and take the road less traveled. It meant I would not always have a secure income; I would have to live in my car for a while; I would have to give up things.

I’ve spent the past four years building two different businesses that are very successful. But the success of these business ventures did not happen in four years. It was a combination of 20 years of learning that made them successful faster.

Yes, I face challenges every day. I often meet with people who tell me they can’t do something; they tell me the challenge they face is tough and I don’t understand. I can answer with one thing: “Yes, I do know the type of challenge you are facing. Even though I’m not living yours, I lived through mine.”

Get up after every fall and learn from it. It’s just like the quote I use from Thomas Edison, now more than ever:

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

~Thomas Edison

No matter what you are facing I want you to think of this story. I did not give up. I am here to tell you that no matter where you are or what you are facing, you can succeed.

With a dream, a plan, a system and support, you can figure out how to get what you want out of life. I can promise you this: today may not be the greatest day, but I’m sure it will not be the worst if you get back up and start again.

  1. Life is a battle that we have to face each day. Your story is so inspiring and it gives me great realization that there are really hard blows in life, but if we are just willing to face those challenges and have the spirit to get up and pursue our dreams, then it is not impossible. I will surely take this story of yours in my heart as it inspires me to face the challenges I have now and for the future. Thank you so much for sharing this.
